What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant traditionally low in THC concentration and higher in CBD. Although there are at least 144 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, there is currently a lot of interest and study around CBD because of its health benefits and lack of psycho-toxic effects.
The Endocannabinoid System: How Does CBD Work?
Cannabidiol has affects the body because it modulates our endocannabinoid system. So far, experts have identified that it impacts several core processes in the human body such as appetite, sleep, mood, and memory – with more discoveries yet to be made.
The endocannabinoid system is made up of three parts: receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids – which all function in the absence of CBD as well. Our endocannabinoids (that we make in our body on demand) bind to receptors such as CB1 and CB2. The CB1 receptors are primarily in the central nervous system and are responsible for modulating coordination, movement, pain, appetite, memory, mood, and other functions. The CB2 receptors are mainly in the peripheral nervous system, influencing pain, and inflammation. Lastly, the enzymes both help with the synthesis and then later, degradation, of our own endocannabinoids.
Endocannabinoid receptors are smart: they can act only on the bodily functions that are out of balance, to achieve precision homeostasis. Endocannabinoids are produced ‘on demand’ when required to help bring about this balance and then broken down by enzymes once they’ve achieved Homeostasis.
This endocannabinoid system works as a unit to ensure that whenever there is a change that can disturb our homeostasis, the various parts of this system work together to once again bring about a sense of balance. Without homeostasis, we may not function optimally as we were designed to do.
Because CBD has been shown to support our endocannabinoid system by reducing the breakdown of Anandamide, one of our key endocannabinoids, it could assist with supporting fundamental processes such as our immune system, pain & inflammation, stress and anxiety and our overall health.
CBD for Health and Wellness
Since the endocannabinoid system interacts with many integral parts of our bodies, it makes sense that CBD would be used medicinally to assist us in our health and wellness. The first step in using CBD to assist with any health challenges is to talk to your healthcare advisor about using CBD as a supplement because they know your medical history best. They can advise on which product to use and the appropriate dose and strength required.
What is CBD Used For?
Cannabidiol (CBD) can be taken as a daily supplement for a variety of reasons – benefitting each consumer by targeting key areas of health concerns. Always remember that CBD products are health supplements and, as such, are used to help maintain and enhance out general wellness.
